چکیده

Direct numerical simulations of flow past cactus-shaped cylinders are performed at Reynolds numbers of 20, 100, and 300. The results are contrasted to those from smooth cylinders at the same Reynolds numbers. The cavities in the cactus-shaped cylinders are seen to reduce the forces acting on them. At Reynolds number of 20, the drag is reduced by 22% due to reduction in the viscous forces. At Reynolds number of 100, the unsteady pressure forces increase, while the unsteady viscous forces acting on the cactus-shaped cylinder decrease. The overall reduction in drag force is about 18%. At Reynolds number of 300, onset of three dimensionality is observed together with significant decrease in pressure and viscous forces. Both the mean and fluctuating forces are found to decrease considerably. The Strouhal number is also found to decrease by about 10%. These reductions in force magnitudes and observed wake instabilities are attributed to the presence of large-scale, quiescent, recirculating flow within the cactus cavities. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Pressure Calculation in the Flow Between Two Rotating Eccentric Cylinders at High Renolds Numbers

This paper reports the result of an analytical investigation of a steady, incompressible and viscous flow between two eccentric, rotating cylinders at high Reynolds number. A one dimensional case is far from reality because the gap between the cylinders is very small. Further, when their axes are displaced by a small distance, usually caused by bearing loads, two dimensional effects become obvi...

Pressure and Force Fluctuations on Isolated Roughened Circular Cylinders of Finite Height in Boundary Layer Flows

This paper presents spatio-temporal measurements of a #uctuating pressure "eld acting on isolated roughened cylinders of "nite height in simulated turbulent boundary layer #ows at subcritical Reynolds numbers. The cylinder surface is roughened by placing discrete roughness elements along the height at four circumferential locations. The resulting surface roughness con"guration helps to modify t...

Aerodynamic Hysteresis of a Low- Reynolds-Number Airfoil

L OW-REYNOLDS-NUMBER airfoil aerodynamics is important for bothmilitary and civilian applications. The applications include propellers, sailplanes, ultralight man-carrying/man-powered aircraft, high-altitude vehicles, wind turbines, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and micro air vehicles (MAVs). For the applications just listed, the combination of small length scale and low flight velocities re...

Experimental study of the aerodynamic noise radiated by cylinders with different cross-sections and yaw angles

Vortex shedding from cylinders has been extensively studied due to its occurrence in many engineering fields. Many experimental studies reported in the literature focus on the aerodynamics of the vortex shedding process but the literature about the radiated noise is more scarce. The aim of the work presented here is to extend the available noise data. Aero-acoustic wind tunnel tests were carrie...

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates

In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...
